The Halifax Jazz Festival has cancelled its Saturday night show after headline act Broken Social Scene pulled out late last week.
Haley Clarke, the festival’s senior marketing manager, confirmed to CBC on Wednesday that the main stage will be dark on the penultimate night of the 40th edition of the festival.
The last-minute change comes after drummer Justin Peroff of the Toronto-based indie rock band fell during a June 26 performance at Vancouver’s FIFA Fan Festival and was sent to hospital.
“We got through the next two shows in Calgary and Edmonton by coming together for something more intimate,” the band wrote in an Instagram post explaining the situation.
“But we don’t feel it’s right to continue without him.”
The Calgary and Edmonton shows were the final two stops on the first leg of the band’s All The Feelings Tour. The Halifax cancellation will give Peroff and the band time to rest before the second leg begins July 24 in Chicago, the post said.
The cancellation means that Nova Scotian-born rocker Loviet, who was scheduled to open for Broken Social Scene on Saturday night, will no longer perform at the festival.
Clarke said Saturday ticket holders can either request a refund for the cancelled show or use their ticket to attend any other night of the festival.
She didn’t share how many tickets had been sold for Saturday night or how many refunds have been processed.
The festival kicked off Tuesday with a show from the Atlantic Jazz Collective, featuring English vocalist Norma Winstone. The festival runs until July 12 and includes performances by the Bahamas, Men I Trust and Rose Cousins.
