People don’t really stay in their seats for long at a Queer As Funk show. By the time the band gets going, most of the room is already dancing.
That energy returns to the Commodore Ballroom, as part of Vancouver Pride on July 31.
Made up of eight queer musicians from Vancouver, Queer As Funk has spent more than a decade turning funk, soul and Motown into joyous, high-energy live shows. Their sets blend classics from artists like Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin with contemporary hits re-imagined through a funk lens.
The formula has earned the band a loyal following and multiple sold-out shows at the Commodore Ballroom, where audiences know to expect less of a stand-and-watch concert and more of a night on the dance floor.
For Vancouver Pride, the band will bring favourites like “Express Yourself,” “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” “Proud Mary” and “Shout,” along with funk-inspired takes on modern hits, including songs by the late, great Amy Winehouse.
Whether you’re a longtime fan or seeing Queer As Funk for the first time, expect a room full of sing-alongs, dancing and the kind of atmosphere that has made the band one of Vancouver’s favourite live acts.
