A 29-year-old Winnipeg man is facing multiple charges after police say he carried out a series of attempted robberies involving an edged weapon and a baton in the city’s North End before being arrested on June 22.
According to the Winnipeg Police Service, officers responded to several robbery reports between about 12:30 p.m. and 12:45 p.m. in the Salter Street and Magnus Avenue area. Police located the suspect a short time later and arrested him after a brief foot pursuit.
Investigators allege the incidents began at a grocery store in the 200 block of Salter Street, where a man announced his intention to rob the business. Police said an employee was assaulted with a baton, while another employee was threatened with an edged weapon.
Employees and two security guards took shelter in a room while the suspect allegedly barricaded the store’s front door before fleeing. Police said no serious injuries were reported.

The suspect is then alleged to have approached two men working near Salter Street and Magnus Avenue and attempted to rob them. Both escaped without injury and called police.
Shortly afterward, police say the suspect assaulted a 19-year-old man near the same intersection and attempted to rob him. The victim was also able to escape without injury.

North District General Patrol officers located the suspect on Salter Street near Magnus Avenue. Police said he fled on foot when officers approached but was arrested a short time later. Officers also seized two weapons during the arrest.
Julius Joseph McKay, 29, has been charged with six counts of robbery, three counts of forcible confinement, two counts of possession of a weapon, and two counts of carrying a concealed weapon.
He was detained in custody.
