Many people use lemon juice to eliminate dandruff, for an oily scalp, and even as a natural hair bleach. But, being very acidic, lemon juice can cause negative effects on hair, whose healthy pH level ranges from 4.5 to 5.5. Therefore, applying lemon juice directly to the scalp may result in irritation of sensitive skin as well as drying out both hair and skin. Also, combined with sun exposure, lemon juice can increase phototoxicity, making the scalp more vulnerable to UV radiation. Therefore, regular application may weaken hair considerably and lead to split ends.
