New radio station tunes into Vernon pub nights

A broader community focus is hitting the airwaves.
Vernon’s newest radio station, 97.9 Valley FM, is launching a monthly pub night to celebrate and tune into the community.
The Army Navy Airforce Veterans Club hosts Marv Machura and Friends Friday, July 17 at 6 p.m., with no charge, live music, prizes and more.
“The dream of having a community radio station in Vernon came together this past fall after many years of set-backs and struggles to make the dream a reality,” said Machura, local musician and a former executive director of the Community Radio Society.
“We are just getting started with programming and creating the station.”
Machura hosts a bi-weekly show, Four Strong Winds featuring Western Canadian roots, on the station.
“The future is wide-open right now for the station. So many people are coming forward with ideas and energy—it’s amazing!”
The 97.9 Valley FM Pub Night will become a monthly event where the Society can interact with the community and bring together all the volunteers, talk and dream of the future, and showcase artists, newsmakers, community builders, sports personalities, musicians, and more.
The first pub night will feature Ken Hardie, President of the Vernon Community Radio Association.
“It’s so wonderful to have community and locally-focused radio station like Valley FM, and we are so glad to welcome Marv Machura and Friends here every month,” said Heather Fullager, ANAVets entertainment coordinator.
