The hit series Department Q is officially returning for a second season! The renewal, which has taken nearly three months to be made official, comes after the show’s successful debut, spending six weeks in the Global Top Ten on Netflix.
Season 2 will be filmed and set in Edinburgh, following the success of the Scottish capital as a backdrop in the first series. Fans can also look forward to the return of the full main cast. Matthew Goode will reprise his role as the cynical DCI Carl Morck, alongside his team of misfits: Alexej Manvelov as Akram, Leah Byrne as Rose, and Jamie Sives as Hardy.
By the end of season 1, the main case had been solved, but the case of who shot Morck in the Leith Park shooting is just beginning and was teed up nicely, alongside other mysteries, in the final episode.
The show was a pretty big hit for Netflix, having spent six weeks in the global top 10s, picking up 27 million views (222.1M hours watched). In the first engagement report for 2025, viewership had extended to 25.4M views for the first half of the year. Even at the time of writing, the show remains in the top 10s in select regions and did very well in its home country of the UK, spending 63 days in the top 10s in total. All of that led to us giving the series an “expected renewal” prediction earlier this year.
The series also picked up solid reviews across the board (including from ourselves) with the show carrying an 88% on RottenTomatoes from critics and 90% from audiences.

“We are raring to return to Carl Morck and his band of glorious misfits at Dept. Q,” said Netflix’s Mona Qureshi and Manda Levin, who oversee the project from Netflix UK’s office in London. “Scott Frank brought us best-in-class storytelling and thrilled Netflix audiences worldwide. We can’t wait to see what Morck and the gang uncover in Season 2…. Edinburgh, we’re back.”
Executive Producer Rob Bullock of Left Bank Pictures echoed that sentiment, stating, “So, we are going downstairs to Dept. Q for a second season. We at Left Bank Pictures nervously await what Scott has in store for his alter-ego Carl Morck, and the other enabling members of team do-lally. We salute Netflix’s courage to let them loose once again.”
Writer and Director Scott Frank expressed his gratitude, while confirming he’ll be back to write and direct, saying, “I’m grateful to the folks at Netflix, as well as our shining cast and crew, for once more risking their careers to enable my folly.”
Finally, series lead Matthew Goode shared his excitement about continuing the story. “I’d like to thank Netflix for giving us the opportunity to further investigate Department Q’s storylines,” Goode said. “We have a wonderful cast and crew, headed by our resident genius Scott Frank. I cannot wait to read what comes from his magic quill!”
No word on production start right now, but fingers crossed, we won’t be waiting long.
