Andrea Pirlo has emerged as the favourite to become the new Italy coach, chosen by technical director Paolo Maldini, but some of the most prominent Italian media appear sceptical: ‘Is it a joke?’ Corriere della Sera asked sarcastically.
Italy are set to hire a new head coach after confirming Maldini’s appointment as the new technical director last weekend.
Roberto Mancini and Antonio Conte were considered the frontrunners for the Italy coaching position before Maldini’s arrival. However, both seem to have lost momentum, especially Conte.
Pirlo, a 2006 World Cup winner, is currently the coach of United FC in the UAE Pro League and previously worked in Italy as Juventus and Sampdoria’s boss.
