Blueberry Festival draws thousands to Surrey farm

Thousands of people spent part of their weekend celebrating blueberry season at the annual Blueberry Festival held at Surrey Farms.

The free weekend event was held on July 11 and welcomed families from across the Lower Mainland to the Surrey farm for blueberry U-pick experiences, children’s activities, live entertainment, food vendors and a farmers market featuring local businesses and craft tables.

Surrey Farms owner Sukhi Rai shared that this festival has become an opportunity to connect the community with local agriculture while showcasing one of the farm’s most significant crops.

“It’s more than just blueberries. It’s more about getting out there and getting the families out to the farm,” said Rai.

He noted blueberries are one of the largest crops grown in the Surrey area, making the annual festival a natural way to celebrate local farming while supporting small businesses.

Local vendors from the farming community displayed and sold a variety of products, including dried blueberries, handmade crafts and other locally produced goods during the events farmers market section.

During its five-hour run, Rai said the event attracted a few thousand visitors, with one of them being Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke.

“The weather was great, and it was a way to bring the kids out of the urban environment and come and relax and see where all this food is grown,” shared Rai.

While Surrey Farms also grows strawberries, the farm does not host a strawberry festival because the harvest typically falls while children are still in school. However the farm does sell their strawberries at local farmers markets.

For Rai, one of the festival’s biggest goals is encouraging residents to support local farmers.

“They need to support the local farmers. They need to buy local products, and I think that’s important in today’s society,” he said. “I think it’s important to see and actually encourage local farmers. To say, ‘Hey guys, the community is with us.’”
