Alberta RCMP say a man was killed Wednesday afternoon in an officer-involved shooting in Brooks, located about 190 kilometres east of Calgary.

Officers had been trying to arrest a wanted man in the town’s Greenbrook neighbourhood at about 4 p.m. when he attempted to flee, according to a Wednesday evening RCMP media release.

During a confrontation with police, the man “produced a weapon,” after which an officer fired their gun, RCMP said.

The man died of his injuries despite police efforts to save his life. No officers were injured, RCMP said.

Alberta’s police watchdog, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), is investigating the incident.

In addition to ASIRT’s independent investigation, the RCMP is conducting an internal review of the incident.
