Jackson Suber leads The 154th Open after an eagle on the par-5 17th.
An outstanding approach shot saw him find the green in two, and a holed putt moved the American to five-under-par, and one clear of Collin Morikawa, Sungjae Im and Daniel Brown.
Im and Brown are finished for the afternoon having carded four-under-par rounds of 66 on a day of warm weather in Southport, while Morikawa is now into his back nine.
Alex Smalley had earlier led on five-under, but a wayward tee shot on the 18th led to a double-bogey. He joins a clutch of other players on three-under-par including Bryson DeChambeau, Robert MacIntyre, and Francesco Molinari.
