Red Deer Tennis Club hosting two major tournaments

Fresh off celebrating its 125th year, Red Deer Tennis Club has more to celebrate.

Now in its 126th year, the club has landed two major tournaments. From July 20-25 Tennis Alberta’s Junior Championships will be held at the club, which has eight outdoor courts and four indoors in the bubble.

From July 31-Aug. 3, the club will host the Alberta Open Tennis Championship, which draws the top players from around the province. It will feature open and amateur categories.

The Alberta Open has a 113-year history, making it one of the longest running tournaments in Canada.

Club board member Mary Gardner said it is a big deal to land the Open.

“I don’t think we’ve ever hosted the Alberta Open.”

Gardner said she would love to see tennis lovers and anyone else who wants to see the sport played by some of the best to come out and watch.
