Westmount Mayor Michael Stern has been cited by Quebec’s Municipal Commission for seven alleged ethics violations, including disrespectful language and uncivil behaviour toward city officials and staff.
The commission outlined the alleged infractions in a three-page report on its website.
“The information in our possession is likely to demonstrate that [Stern] committed breaches of the rules set out in By-law No. 1651 concerning the code of ethics and professional conduct for elected municipal officials of the City of Westmount,” the report reads.
The allegations relate to three meetings held with city officials in April and May. Stern is accused of behaving in “an uncivil manner” toward the city’s deputy director general, the director of human resources, the director of legal services, the director of finance, the director of land management and other city employees.
Stern declined CBC’s request for an interview, but in a statement said he plans to contest the allegations.
“I am a passionate person. City Hall staff, our municipal council and I are working very hard to implement the change agenda I was elected on to improve the lives of Westmounters, and we will continue to do that,” he wrote.
Stern added he will not comment further while the matter is under review.
