A new rec centre is set to open on the same block in North Vancouver later this month. Here’s how it went down 60 years ago
In March 1966, North Vancouver spent a week celebrating the opening of the new North Vancouver Recreation Centre and Centennial Theatre. The festivities kicked off with a ball in the curling rink, followed the next day by a cadet parade up Lonsdale culminating in a ribbon cutting ceremony led by Lt.-Gov. George Pearkes.
The ensuing days saw swimming exhibitions, water safety demonstrations, performances of school and amateur plays and a special showcase by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
Now, 60 years later, North Vancouver will soon celebrate the opening of a new recreation centre.… What will the festivities bring this time?
