Normally, the winner of a plate race defaulting to the pole at a short track would be an issue. Not this time. He’s a great short track driver and could have won the pole had qualifying taken place. As for practice speeds, don’t get lost in the sauce. Christopher Bell is everyone’s darling this week. He ran 34 laps with a median time of 18.8 seconds on his first stint, and his best lap of that run was the fastest of Saturday’s session at North Wilkesboro. Blaney’s median lap was also 18.8 during his initial run. On paper, some drivers appear faster, but on this short track, these cars are the same.

Practice laps can be overrated. Staring at thousands of lap times with little difference seems like a good way to waste time. Fall-off was minimal. The Gen-7 stock cars are the same. The talent isn’t that separated. Still, the data matters. The numbers on the page look the same, but look beyond the numbers. Those numbers are real-life laps. Christopher Bell had to turn those laps. He’s got to rip 450 on Sunday night. That’s not easy, but it’s easier if you did a good job in Saturday’s practice.

Carson Hocevar | Finishing Position: 9.5

Based on talent and the speed in the Spire Motorsports Chevy, Hocevar is a “Better” pick. Racing does not exist in a vacuum. Hocevar knows this all too well. He’s thirsty. The kid is a slave to social media and streaming. He hosts fan events at race tracks. The Gen-Z Gen-7 driver is always looking for a gimmick that will get attention. The Cup Series drivers hate Hocevar, but only partially because of his nerdom. Mostly, they hate his aggressive style. He wrecks a lot of drivers. What goes around comes around — or better stated, Hocevar is due to be spun around. North Wilkesboro is the perfect track to exact revenge. The Cup Series drivers Hocevar has rubbed the wrong way — the entire field — will take their turn, and Hocevar will take his licks.
