The Calgary Stampeders have released American defensive back Benny Sapp III and American receiver Rashod Owens, the team announced on Monday.
Sapp III started the team’s last three regular-season games at field-side halfback, recording seven defensive tackles. The 26-year-old was penalized for unnecessary roughness in Calgary recent loss to the Montreal Alouettes, a call that was publicly criticized by head coach and general manager Dave Dickenson.
The five-foot-eleven, 200-pound defender played six regular-season games with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2025, making 19 defensive tackles, three special teams tackles, and one forced fumble.

The native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. played five regular-season games with the Green Bay Packers in 2023, recording two tackles. He also had a stint on the practice roster with the Atlanta Falcons in 2024.
Owens made Calgary’s practice roster after the preseason.
The 24-year-old native of San Antonio, Texas attended training camp with the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent in 2025 but didn’t make the team’s final roster.
The six-foot-two, 226-pound target played collegiately at Oklahoma State University.
The Calgary Stampeders (2-4) will visit the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (4-2) at Princess Auto Stadium on Friday, July 24 with kickoff scheduled for 8:30 p.m. EDT. The Stampeders lost to the Montreal Alouettes in a failed comeback bid this past week, while the Blue Bombers defeated the Ottawa Redblacks in overtime.
