The Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, MA, has revealed the design for the new Aso O. Tavitian Wing, designed by Selldorf Architects. Groundbreaking is scheduled for January 2027, with completion anticipated in 2028.

The new wing will house the Tavitian Collection, one of the most significant private collections of European art assembled in the twenty-first century and among the largest gifts in the Clark’s history. The expansion will include twelve galleries arranged on a single level, providing dedicated exhibition spaces for works intended to be viewed in an intimate setting.

In addition to increasing gallery space, the project will expand the museum’s art storage facilities. The new building will connect the Clark’s main museum building with the Manton Research Center, both of which were previously renovated by Selldorf Architects.

The addition will feature a stone facade incorporating multicolored veined marble in tones intended to complement the adjoining buildings. Reed Hilderbrand, a longtime collaborator with both the Clark and Selldorf Architects, is designing the surrounding landscape to integrate the new wing with the institute’s pastoral campus.

“We conceived the new wing as a companion to the Manton Research Center and the 1955 museum building,” Annabelle Selldorf shared about the scheme. “It is sympathetic to each of the volumes it connects, yet its architectural identity and layout are distinct.”

“The scale, materials, use of natural light, and views of the landscape will enable visitors to view the extraordinary works of art in new galleries that are at once intimate yet present memorable proportions,” Selldorf added. “They are focused on the experience of the eminent collection and orient visitors to the surrounding Berkshires and the Clark campus.”
