The Semiahmoo Peninsula offers something for everybody, at every stage of life and no matter their ability or area of interest. For those in their golden years – whether just entering the phase, or well into it – the options are bountiful, and include:
Kent Street Activity Centre in White Rock – Located at 1475 Kent St., this centre is a hive of activity for those aged 55 or better; a place where a variety of interest groups gather throughout the week, and where seniors can play a little snooker or cards, enjoy a friendly lunch, meet new and old friends, get their groove on, and more. Hours are typically 8:30 a.m. till 6 p.m., and the centre is closed on statutory holidays. For more information, call 604-541-2199.
Brella Community Services – Located at 15008 26 Ave., Brella offers assistance, information and support to seniors, their families and members of the community. With integrity, respect, compassion and inclusiveness among its core values, Brella strives to provide a place where aging adults can feel empowered and connected; develop social skills; access recreational activities; and benefit from improved emotional and social well-being. South Surrey Recreation & Arts Centre – Located at 14600 20 Ave., this expansive facility is home to recreation and art services, three gymnasiums, a pottery studio and more. Fully accessible, it’s a great place to meet new people and enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle. An annual membership for those 55 or better is just $30, with benefits including access to free or nominal-fee volunteer-led activities, events and clubs. For book lovers – The Semiahmoo Peninsula is home to three libraries: White Rock Library (15342 Buena Vista Ave., 604-541-2201), Semiahmoo Library (1815 152 St.; 604-592-6900) and Ocean Park Library (12854 17 Ave., 604-502-6304), each stocked with a wealth of books, eBooks, DVDs and more – something for all ages, stages and interests. For gardeners – Have a penchant for everything green, or green-adjacent? A pair of gardening clubs – White Rock & District Garden Club and South Surrey Garden Club – are invaluable sources of information and connection for gardening enthusiasts of all ages. The WRDGC (white-rock-garden-club.ca) meets September through June at Gracepoint Community Church (3487 King George Blvd.). on the second Tuesday of the month. Annual membership for individuals is $25. For more information, email info@whiterockgardenclub.ca. The 300-member SSGC (southsurreygardenclub.ca) next meets on June 24 at St. Mark’s Church (12953 20 Ave.). In addition to meetings on the fourth Wednesday of the month (excluding August and December), the club holds workshops, tours and more. Annual memberships are $35; drop-in to a meeting for $5. There is also an Intergenerational Therapeutic Garden in South Surrey Athletic Park (14600 20 Ave.). In operation for more than a decade, the spot is used frequently by seniors and young children for activities such as storytime circles and senior group meet-ups.
