First of all, I do not know what you think about the new overtime rules, but I love it! Get rid of the tie, keep the mini games, and then go to 2-point converts.

Listen, if you are going to take ties out of the game, which I am a huge fan of, the 2-point converts are way more entertaining than penalty kicks in soccer, or that other football game. If you do not like the 2-point converts than go ahead and suggest something else in the comments section.

The rest of the game was down right ugly! Leading up to the game I said Revenge Game? I Hope Not – Winnipeg at Ottawa

Read the article to see why I was going against almost every other media person’s view. And you know what? I might have been right, about not wanting the game to have been a revenge game. The Bombers’ offence looked distracted in the first half. They sure were not moving the ball and they were only getting field goals (a total of 6 in the game). That is exactly what I would expect if a team, and the starting quarterback, were looking at the game as a ‘revenge game.’ Brown did not look like the same player as he did a week ago when they beat Toronto 31-20.

The Ugly

On numerous occasions Brown was trying to pick on a particular defender, who’s name eludes me at the moment…and multiple times that was almost picked off. It was not clean, it was not crisp, it was not the right read. Brown’s numbers were not terrible at the end of the game, but the performance in the first three quarters was not great.

However, Brown simply cannot be blamed for all of the game looking ugly. The Bombers quite literally almost lost the game more than Ottawa almost won the game. The Bombers had a turnover on downs early in the game that resulted in an Ottawa field goal. The there was a roughing the kicker call against Winnipeg that ended up in another Ottawa field goal. That is 6 points on mistakes.

On top of that, Winnipeg took a pass interference penalty that put the ball on the one yard line, and on the next play Ottawa scored a touchdown. Look, I get it. If you are beat completely, taking a pass interference penalty buys you another chance at a stop. But here is the thing…the ball was overthrown and thrown out of bounds. The replay centre probably should have over turned that call, but they have been highly inconsistent with what they do and do not do.

Additionally, Ottawa was going to score from the one-yard line, almost guaranteed. The short yardage package for Ottawa was very good up to that point. And after they scored that touchdown that was 13 points off of Bomber mistakes. Then there was a 25-yard roughing the passer penalty that Winnipeg took. Fortunately, Ottawa did not score any points on that possession as they turned it over on downs.

The Good
It took until the fourth quarter for Winnipeg to look like themselves. Good thing they were playing Ottawa, because if they were playing a better team this game would have been over early.

In the fourth quarter the Bombers put up 17 points (and they needed all of them) and kept Ottawa to zero points that quarter.

Cue overtime. Winnipeg won the coin toss and decide that they would go second in the first mini-game. The benefit of going second is that you have seen how many, if any, points your opponent has scored, so you know what you need to do. Winnipeg matched Ottawa with field goals in both mini-games, but it sure was dramatic.

Still being tied, and under new rules for the 2026 season, CFL games cannot end in a tie. So, they went to 2-point convert tries. It is much like the mini-games; if one team puts up the 2 point convert and the other team does not match…game over. However, if both teams make their 2 point convert, they do it again, and again, until someone emerges the winner.

Both Winnipeg and Ottawa made their first 2-point convert…and Winnipeg looked really smooth and efficient. (It makes me wonder if they may try more of those in the upcoming games).

It was at this point that Ottawa showed why they were 0-5, now 0-6. Winnipeg ran a very similar play for their second 2 point convert, and Ottawa was not even close to stopping it.

Final Thoughts
They do not ask you how they just ask how many? And that is a good thing for the Bombers in this game. Now that this revenge game is done, I sincerely hope the Bombers and Brown get back to playing the type of football they can.

Yes, it is always nice to get a win, and boy oh boy you do not want to be the team that gave an 0-5 Ottawa team their first win of the season. But now with that drama done Winnipeg needs to focus on Calgary.

Sure, Calgary is 2-4, but do not sleep on them. They can score a ton of points. They put up 58 against Toronto in Week 5, 41 against BC in Week 4, and 37 in a losing effort in Week 3. So far, the most points Winnipeg has scored is 36…and that took 2 mini-games and 2 made 2 point converts.
