Residents near Schanzenfeld got an unexpected start to their day Monday when a moose was spotted in a field near the community school.
The animal drew plenty of attention from passing motorists and local residents, with numerous photos and videos being shared online throughout the day. Witnesses described the moose as appearing to be younger and not yet fully grown.
“There is a moose right outside of Schanzenfeld by the school,” one resident said after spotting the animal. “Doesn’t look full grown. I would say maybe a teenager, but there is like a moose in the field.”
Another resident reported seeing the moose during their morning commute.
“Saw it on my way to work this morning at 6:15 a.m.,” they said.
Another Moose recently reported near Haskett
While moose sightings are relatively uncommon in the immediate Winkler area, they are not unheard of in the Pembina Valley.
One resident noted that a moose had also been spotted near Haskett recently.
“There was a moose near Haskett a bit over a week ago,” they said.
It is unclear whether the Schanzenfeld sighting involved the same animal.

The sighting quickly became a topic of conversation across the region as residents shared images and videos of the wandering moose. Although encounters like this are rare, they serve as a reminder that wildlife can sometimes turn up in unexpected places.
Anyone who encounters a moose is encouraged to keep their distance and allow the animal plenty of space as it continues on its way.
