The Golf and T-Roc full hybrid shows Volkswagen filling the gap between eTSI mild hybrids and plug-in hybrids on its own terms
Volkswagen has opened pre-sales in Germany for a new 125 kW full hybrid drive for the Golf and T-Roc, enabling electric driving without any external charging infrastructure. Combining a 1.5 TSI evo2 petrol engine with two electric motors and a 1.6 kW/h (gross) battery, the system produces 309 Nm and a 7.5-second 0-100 km/h time.
The battery charges entirely on board through recuperation and the petrol engine working with a generator, with no charging point or cable required. German market pricing starts at €41,400 (US$47,610) for the Golf Hybrid in R-Line specification, with the T-Roc Style with hybrid drive available from €44,470 (US$51,141).

Three operating modes manage the powertrain automatically: electric-only propulsion at low speeds; serial drive, where the petrol engine runs decoupled to generate electricity; and parallel drive above around 60 km/h, with the electric motor acting as a booster. Against a comparable Golf 1.5 eTSI with 110 kW, CO₂ emissions fall by 10–15% on the combined test cycle, with an urban efficiency advantage of up to 35%.
Three driving profiles are selectable (Eco, Comfort, and Sport), each adjusting boost availability and system output limits to suit different demands. The full hybrid sits between Volkswagen’s existing eTSI mild hybrid and its eHybrid and GTE plug-in hybrids, with a further performance variant of the 125 kW system planned.
