On This Day in Boxing History… July 22nd

1963.- American Sonny Liston knocked out Floyd Patterson in the first round in Las Vegas, Nevada, successfully defending his WBC heavyweight title. It was an immediate rematch of their first bout with an almost identical outcome.

1987.- In a thrilling contest, Mexico’s René Arredondo captured the WBC super lightweight championship by knocking out Japan’s Tsuyoshi Hamada in the sixth round. The fight took place in Tokyo, Japan, allowing him to regain the title he had lost months earlier.

1995.- Britain’s Nigel Benn defended his WBC super middleweight title by knocking out Italian challenger Vincenzo Nardiello in eight rounds, during an intense bout held in London, England.

2006.- Argentina’s Carlos “El Tata” Baldomir knocked out legendary Canadian-American slugger Arturo Gatti in the ninth round in Atlantic City, New Jersey, successfully defending his WBC welterweight title.

2017.- Mexico’s Miguel “Alacrán” Berchelt successfully defended his WBC super featherweight championship by defeating former world champion Takashi Miura of Japan via unanimous decision, in a hard-fought battle held in Inglewood, California.
