The path to the podium has been set for Team NI at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, following today’s draw.
Team NI Boxing has departed for Glasgow and the Commonwealth Games.
Boxing is Team NI’s most successful sport, having won 61 CWG medals, of which 13 are gold. Team NI topped the medal table in the ring four years ago in Birmingham with 5 golds and silver and a bronze.
The team was announced in May and since then, has been in training at the Ulster High Performance Unit, supported by Sport NI, and Sport NI sport science medicine practitioners. There preparations have included a 10 week bloc of training, contesting the Eindhoven Box Cup, the 34th Ahmet Comert Bosporus International in Turkey and against a Scotland select.
Preparation culminated in the largest sparring camp ever held on the island of Ireland – a 16 nation camp in Belfast from July 6th to 16th, including Team NI Boxing; Team Ireland; Australia; Canada; Fiji; France; Ghana; GB; India; Mauritius, Nigeria, New Zealand; Scotland; Soloman Islands, Switzerland; Tonga; Tuvalu; Zambia. In all, over 200 boxers, coaches and support staff participated in the camp, which included 300 spars and 7 school combat sessions.

Nicole Clyde is in a 54kg category of 17 boxers, but benefits from a bye to the Last 16. The Antrim BC boxer opens her account on Sunday against Ghana’s Nancy Bamfo.

Defending champion Michaela Walsh benefits from a bye to the Quarter Finals.The Holy Family boxer takes on effective home boxer, Lara Brown of Scotland.

Birmingham 57kg champ, Team NI’s Jude Gallagher returns at lightweight.The Two Castles team co-captain benefits from an L16 bye and meets either Ghana or Pakistan.

JP Hale begins his Games on Tuesday.The 65kg Star BC boxer has a bye to the Last 16 and takes on AP Yadav of India .

Kaci Rock is a win away from the podium.The draw has given her a quarter final start Niue’s Karen Te Ruki Pasene

Jon McConnell begins his Commonwealth Games campaign on Monday.The 70kg boxer has a bye to the Last 16, and will meet India’s Sumit

Jansseen Hill makes her debut at Quarter Final stage, one win away from a medal. The 70kg boxer takes on England’s Chantelle Reid on Wednesday.

Eoghan Quinn benefits from a bye to the Last 16. The 80kg boxer opens his account on Monday against the winner of the meeting of the Seychelles & Solomon Islands.

Heavyweight Garyn McAllister opens his account on Tuesday.He has a bye to the Last 16, and meets Ghana’s Jibril Muntari.

Superheavy Willie John McCartan begins his Commonwealth Games 1 win away from a medal. He boxes a quarter final against Ghana’s Daniel Plange on Wednesday

Boxing at the SEC Centre on the Scottish Event Campus will take place from Friday July 24th to Saturday, August 1st,: July 30th is a rest day.
