About $27.5 million in upgrades are coming to Newton Athletic Park and Unwin Park that will deliver new amenities and athletic facilities that will benefit residents, athletes and visitors alike.
The investment includes $16.5 million from the City of Surrey and $11 million from the Government of Canada through the Build Communities Strong Fund.
These projects enhance public spaces and community amenities in Newton, while advancing Surrey’s Sport Tourism Strategy by adding facilities that support local sporting clubs and help attract sporting tournaments and events.
Park improvements to support healthy, active communities
Newton Athletic Park is one of Surrey’s premier sport destinations serving athletes, sports organizations and residents year-round. New amenities being added to the park include a new turf field and practice area, energy efficient lighting along the walking track, and 4 new lighted tennis courts.
Unwin Park is set to become an even more active and inclusive community hub with a range of new amenities. Guided by public feedback in the development of the Unwin Park Plan, new facilities include:
a covered sport court a field house with washrooms and change rooms pickleball, tennis and basketball courts enhanced walking paths upgraded spray park
Additional parking, new park entrances, and other amenities will help strengthen accessibility and community use.
Construction to begin this summer
Upgrades to these parks will begin this summer beginning with the covered sport court at Unwin Park. Many of these improvements will be added over the next few years.
