Vancouver-based indie rock performer Destroyer is coming to The Vault Cafe in Nanaimo for two days.
The artist, which is the project of Dan Bejar, will be playing on Thursday, July 23, with doors opening at 7 p.m. and the show at 8 p.m.
Bejar is known for his sharp, evocative lyrics and shape-shifting approach to the genre, according to a release from The Vault Cafe release.
According to the release, these rare and intimate performances will spotlight the lyrical craft and magnetic presence that had made Destroyer a singular voice in contemporary music.
Jeremy Van Wyck, booking agent for The Vault Cafe, said that it is quite special that Destroyer has reached out to come to The Vault Cafe.
“They just said they’ve been hearing good things [about the venue],” Van Wyck said.
Van Wyck said that The Vault Cafe has been getting lucky with international artists getting through or hearing about the venue through word of mouth. Van Wyck gave as an example, Lori Goldston, who had played alongside Kurt Cobain with the band Nirvana, had a concert at The Vault Cafe, recently.
“A friend here told her about the cafe, came on a day off, saw it, and saw what a great space acoustically, et cetera, and this is, I think the third time performing there since I’ve been booking,” Van Wyck stated. “We are just kinda getting out there through musicians.”
This is the first time, he believes, that Destroyer is performing in Nanaimo, and relayed a story about a friend that had wanted to see them in the city.
“The guy who used to book in town 20, 25 years ago – apparently when Destroyer first started, he was a huge fan early on, and would send a message to come here, really wanted him to come to Nanaimo.”
Tickets for Destroyer are available at gigpit.ca.
