‘It was a true pleasure filming in the region, and I’m thrilled that audiences in North Bay will now have the opportunity to experience the film where so much of it was created’
A feature film set in North Bay and Powassan is returning to where it was filmed, as The Outer Threat arrives at Cineplex North Bay starting Friday, July 24.
Directed by award-winning filmmaker William Woods and distributed by VVS Films, The Outer Threat stars Constance Wu, Mark O’Brien, and William Fichtner in a science-fiction thriller exploring family, discovery, and the consequences of revealing a world-changing secret.
“North Bay and Powassan provided the perfect backdrop for The Outer Threat. The landscapes gave us the scale and atmosphere we needed for the story, while the local crew brought professionalism, creativity, and enthusiasm to the production every day,” said William Woods, Director of The Outer Threat.
“It was a true pleasure filming in the region, and I’m thrilled that audiences in North Bay will now have the opportunity to experience the film where so much of it was created.”
For Woods, The Outer Threat marks another connection to the region after previously filming the award-winning feature The Kid Detective in North Bay, which was released in 2020. His other producing credits include Mean Dreams, Castle in the Ground, and The King Tide.
“North Bay and area continue to welcome film and television productions drawn to the region’s diverse locations, skilled workforce, and production-friendly environment,” Woods continued in a release.
“Local audiences are encouraged to support the production and experience North Bay and Powassan on the big screen.”
The Outer Threat follows an astrophysicist who, after making a groundbreaking extraterrestrial discovery, is forced to flee with his family from their home — pursued through the countryside by a relentless and anonymous assailant. As their flight unfolds, the line between cosmic revelation and human paranoia blurs, leading to a tense and emotional confrontation that challenges the boundaries of understanding, science, and survival.
Mark O’Brien told CTV Your Morning, about the filming experience in the North Bay area during an interview earlier this week.
“It was really cool for what the movie is because our characters live in the movie,” O’Brien told CTV Your Morning.
“Sort of a little bit outside the city, and that’s kind of the thing we’re off the grid in a certain way. And North Bay is so beautiful in exactly what the movie was supposed to represent, in this sort of, like… sort of man versus nature, in a sense. And I thought it was captured really well with that. It is beautiful, and I think a lot of people can relate to the landscape.”
The Outer Threat (2026) is also available to rent or buy on digital VOD platforms including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV Store, and Fandango At Home, as detailed on JustWatch.
