To accommodate the influx of athletes competing at triathlon, several road closures will be in effect on Sunday, officials warn

Toronto’s waterfront area will become a hub of athleticism on Sunday as participants of the annual Supertri event swim, bike and run to the finish line.

Formerly known as Toronto Triathlon Festival, the event features a 1.5-kilometre swim at Ontario Place, a 40-kilometre bike ride on the Gardiner Expressway and Don Valley Parkway and 10-kilometre run along Lake Shore Boulevard.

There is also a shorter version of the race with a 750-metre swim, a 20-kilometre bike ride and a five-kilometre run.

To accommodate the influx of athletes competing, several road closures will be in effect on Sunday.

The westbound curb lane of Lake Shore Boulevard West will be closed from New Brunswick Way to British Columbia Road beginning at 5 a.m. until about 2 p.m.

The eastbound curb lane of Lake Shore Boulevard West will be closed from Ontario Drive to approximately 300 metres east of British Columbia Road beginning at 4 a.m. until 11 a.m.

Eastbound Gardiner Expressway lanes will be shut down from the Humber River to the Don Valley Parkway from 2 a.m. until noon.

Also from 2 a.m. until noon, the northbound Don Valley Parkway will be closed from the Gardiner Expressway to Eglinton Avenue.

Motorists are advised to expect delays in the area and to plan their trip ahead of time.

Organizers said they are expecting over 1,750 athletes to compete on Sunday.

Full race maps are available on the Supertri website.

The full race will begin at 8:20 a.m.
