The Grunthal and Area Lions Club is teeing up a new fundraiser this summer as demand for local food banks and meal programs continues to grow.
Doug Wiens with the club says the need in the community has increased, making fundraising efforts more important than ever.
“Unfortunately, the need is growing,” Wiens says.
“We are there to fill the vacuum.”
Tournament details
The club’s first annual golf tournament will take place Aug. 8 at Maplewood Golf Course.
The tournament features a 10 a.m. shotgun start and costs $150 per player.
Registration includes 18 holes of golf and a smoked brisket dinner.
Those who don’t golf can still support the fundraiser by purchasing a $50 evening meal, which includes smoked brisket, pulled pork mac and cheese and vegetarian options.
“I’ve had it before. It’s absolutely delicious,” he says.

Supporting the community year-round
The golf tournament is the latest in a series of fundraising initiatives organized by the Lions Club.
Throughout the summer, volunteers host weekly Thursday barbecue fundraisers in partnership with Grunthal Grocery from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., selling hot dogs and a bottle of water for $5.
Last year, the barbecues raised $2,400 for the local food bank, and all proceeds again this year are being donated to the organization.
Alongside the other initiatives, the club runs a Chase the Ace which supports three scholarships awarded annually — two in St. Pierre and one in Grunthal.
“We’re on summer break right now. It’s resuming September 10.”
Wiens says the club remains committed to supporting both local families facing food insecurity and students pursuing post-secondary education through its community fundraising efforts.
