Stefon Diggs may still be without a team as training camps continue across the NFL, but the veteran wide receiver has received an encouraging development regarding his future.
After weeks of speculation about where the four-time Pro Bowler could continue his career, a new report suggests the Washington Commanders have emerged as one of the most intriguing possibilities.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Washington is a destination that appeals to Diggs, giving the former Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots receiver a realistic opportunity to join a team with legitimate Super Bowl aspirations.
“A recent report indicated five teams have been keeping tabs on free agent wide receiver Stefon Diggs heading into free agency and there’s now word of a team that has caught Diggs’s eye,” Fowler reported.
The report adds that “the prospect of joining the Commanders is ‘intriguing’ to the veteran wideout.”
Several factors reportedly make Washington an attractive landing spot. Rookie sensation Jayden Daniels has quickly established himself as one of the league’s most exciting young quarterbacks, while Diggs also has strong personal ties to the area.
The receiver grew up in Maryland before starring at the University of Maryland, making a return to the region an appealing possibility.
The Commanders have also transformed into one of the NFC’s rising contenders after an impressive 2025 campaign, meaning Diggs would not simply be joining a familiar market, he would also have the opportunity to compete for a championship.
Last season, Diggs showed he can still perform at a high level despite entering the later stages of his career. Playing for the New England Patriots, he caught 85 passes for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns while serving as the focal point of the team’s passing attack.
Washington could offer Diggs the perfect fit
Although there is currently no indication that a contract is imminent, Washington appears to have reasons to consider adding another experienced playmaker.
The Commanders have frequently been linked with San Francisco 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk throughout the offseason, but that move has yet to materialize.
With Aiyuk remaining under team control in San Francisco, Diggs represents one of the most accomplished alternatives still available on the open market.
Adding the veteran would give Washington another proven weapon alongside star receiver Terry McLaurin, creating a formidable receiving duo for Daniels as the franchise looks to build on last season’s success.
Diggs also brings a résumé few available players can match.
Since entering the NFL in 2015 after being selected by the Minnesota Vikings, he has developed into one of football’s most productive receivers.
He earned All-Pro honors during his time with the Buffalo Bills, led the NFL in receptions and receiving yards in 2020, and has surpassed the 1,000-yard mark in multiple seasons throughout his career.
While his tenure in New England demonstrated he remains productive, joining a playoff contender would likely offer a very different situation than the rebuilding Patriots.
The Commanders, meanwhile, have aggressively upgraded their roster around Daniels in hopes of accelerating their championship window.
Pairing an experienced route-runner like Diggs with McLaurin would give opposing defenses another difficult matchup while providing the young quarterback with an additional reliable target.
Whether Washington ultimately makes an offer remains uncertain.
“There’s no word if the Commanders share the interest,” Fowler noted, though he added that the team has been evaluating options to strengthen its receiving corps.
For Diggs, the timing could hardly be better. Rather than waiting for injuries to create opportunities later in the season, the veteran now appears to have interest from a franchise positioned to contend immediately.
A move to Washington would reunite him with his home region, pair him with one of the NFL’s brightest young quarterbacks and give him another realistic opportunity to chase the Super Bowl that has so far eluded him throughout an accomplished career.
