2026 has been a huge year for Michael Bay fans, but not because he’s had any new release. One of the most underrated shows of Bay’s career is The Last Ship, starring the late Eric Dane, who tragically passed away earlier this year after a battle with ALS. The Last Ship is a dystopian sci-fi thriller that Bay produced following a Navy battleship as it travels around the world searching for a cure to a deadly virus and later, a means to spread the cure once found. While Bay didn’t direct any episodes of The Last Ship, his creative insight as a producer is all over the many action scenes in the show. All episodes of The Last Ship were added to Netflix back in June, and it’s quietly had a resurgence as one of the biggest shows of the year.
Michael Bay has directed plenty of great action movies over the years, but back in 2022, he teamed up with a pair of big-time stars for one of the most underrated thrillers of his entire career. Bay guided both Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II to the most high-octane performances of their career in Ambulance, the heist thriller following two robbers who are forced to steal an ambulance after their robbery goes sideways. Ambulance struggled to get off the ground at the box office, grossing only $52 million globally against a $40 million budget, but the film received a mostly positive 68% from critics on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes to pair with a strong 87% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. Ambulance has found a home streaming on Netflix after its theatrical run, and the film has also jumped into the VOD top 10 on both Prime Video and Apple TV.

When Does Michael Bay’s Next Movie Come Out?
It appears at the time of writing that Michael Bay’s next movie will be his Skibidi Toilet adaptation, which is now in production, but the film is still without an official release date. Bay was briefly attached for a Bad Boys reunion with Will Smith’s new Netflix action movie, Fast and Loose, but Bay left the project after citing creative differences with John Swab taking over as director. Bay will also direct a new action movie, OutRun, but there’s no word yet on when the film will be released. His last feature film before Ambulance was the 2019 Ryan Reynolds-led action thriller, 6 Underground, which is streaming on Netflix.
