For most of the year, Hycroft sits quietly behind its gates, admired from the sidewalk but rarely explored. Next month, Vancouverites will get another chance to wander the historic estate when the Hycroft Garden Party returns for an afternoon of wine, art, and old-world charm.

Back after selling out its inaugural event last year, the fundraiser invites guests to explore the gardens and mansion of the Shaughnessy landmark while supporting the preservation of one of Vancouver’s most significant heritage properties.

“The response to last year’s inaugural event was incredible. We were thrilled to see so many people enjoy the gardens and learn more about this historical pillar right in the centre of the city,” shares the Hycroft Heritage Preservation president Robin Halpern in a release. “The response is what prompted us to make this into an annual event, with all proceeds going towards preserving the estate and allowing for more community events in the future.”

The afternoon includes wine tastings from B.C. wineries, light bites, live music, and artists creating works on-site. Ernest Ice Cream will also be serving scoops, while a display of vintage automobiles from the Vintage Car Club of Canada adds to the estate’s time-capsule atmosphere. One lucky attendee will even win a ride in a classic car, which is admittedly a much more stylish exit than calling a rideshare.

Visitors can also join guided tours of the mansion or explore the grounds at their own pace. Hycroft’s Master Gardener will be on hand throughout the event to answer questions about the estate’s gardens, landscaping, and the diverse plant life throughout the property.

Built in 1911 for General Alexander McRae, Hycroft has lived several lives over the past century. During the Second World War, it was transferred to the federal government before being purchased in 1962 by the University Women’s Club of Vancouver. At a time when women couldn’t qualify for mortgages or bank loans on their own, members raised the funds to purchase the property, which continues to serve as the club’s home while advancing education, opportunity, and the rights of women.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Hycroft Heritage Preservation Foundation and its ongoing efforts to preserve the estate for future generations.
