Beyond new editions, board books, and storybooks based on C.S Lewis’s The Magician’s Nephew, Narnia fans can add a “making of” book to that growing list.
Tom Shone, film critic and author of seven books about film including The Nolan Variations, Tarantino: A Retrospective, and Blockbuster: How Hollywood Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Summer, will be releasing a new book based on the production of Greta Gerwig’s film adaptation.
Shone also happens to be a noted Narnia fan. He told The Creative Adventure in 2023 that his life was “altered” after reading all seven books and considers them his first taste of escapism growing up, “I just wanted to live in that world.”
While we don’t know exactly which direction the book will take yet, his 2019 book chronicling another Netflix production, Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, may give fans a hint as to what to expect.
That featured “special on-set photography, studio portraits, unit photography and a text by author and film critic Tom Shone” alongside interviews with the film’s cast and creative team taking readers “behind the scenes and examines the making of The Irishman in the context of Scorsese’s expansive career.”
NarniaWeb first learned in April that Shone had spent time on set during filming of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew throughout 2025.
The book is tentatively set for release in November, though the film’s new February 2027 release date will likely impact that timeline.
