Two Elmwood Golf Club members are bringing provincial championships back to Swift Current after standout performances at the Saskatchewan Senior Championships in Meadow Lake.

Brent Wotypka captured the Super Senior 65+ championship, while Kathy Hopfner defended her Mae Balmos 60+ title during the three-day tournament, which wrapped up Sunday.

Wotypka claims second Super Senior title

Wotypka finished the tournament at 10-over par to win the Super Senior 65+ division by two strokes over Regina’s Ken Rodgers of Tor Hill Golf Club.

Entering the final round with a three-shot lead, Wotypka carded a 75, highlighted by three birdies, including one on the 18th hole to secure the championship.

He opened the tournament with rounds of 75 and 76.

The victory marks Wotypka’s second Super Senior provincial title after also winning in 2023 at Cooke Municipal Golf Course in Prince Albert.

Competing in the Mid-Masters 40+ division, Wotypka tied for 14th among 63 golfers, finishing 16 shots behind champion Chris Reid of Meadow Lake Golf Club.

Hopfner repeats as Mae Balmos champion

Hopfner successfully defended her Mae Balmos 60+ championship, finishing at 64-over par.

She closed the tournament with her best round of the week, an 89, after opening with rounds of 93 and 92. Her only birdie of the championship came on the opening hole of Sunday’s final round.

The victory is Hopfner’s third Mae Balmos championship, having also won in 2019 at Royal Regina Golf Club and last year at Chinook Golf Course in Swift Current.

She also finished third in the Senior Women’s championship, 39 shots behind winner Kim Walker of Wascana Country Club.

Swift Current golfers have now won the Mae Balmos title three consecutive years after Denise Wilson claimed the championship in 2024 at Evergreen Golf Course in Nipawin.

Elmwood golfers post strong results

Rod Grose tied for 31st in the Mid-Masters 40+ division at 24-over par after rounds of 80, 79 and 81.

Allyson Grose finished second behind Hopfner in the Mae Balmos 60+ division, posting rounds of 110, 114 and 121.
