The conservation authority says the designated lands include wetland, forests and waterways
The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority (SSMRCA) is contributing to Canada’s 30×30 target with 1,956.59 hectares of SSMRCA’s Conservation and Management areas. This target aims to protect and conserve 30 per cent of lands and waters by 2030.
Areas include: the Fort Creek, Gros Cap, Hiawatha Highlands, Marks Bay, and Shore Ridges Conservation Areas. These areas consist of woodlands, wetlands, streams, rivers, lakes, and ponds, providing “essential ecosystem services, including flood reduction, erosion protection, habitats for wildlife and plants, biodiversity protection, and recreational opportunities for community members,” says a news release issued by SSMRCA.
“SSMRCA is thrilled to announce our 30×30 contribution, in partnership with Ontario Nature. We are committed to safeguarding our green spaces to ensure these areas continue to thrive and, in turn, provide valuable natural and recreational benefits for the citizens of Algoma,” said Corrina Barrett, General Manager of SSMRCA in the news release.

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority (SSMRCA), in collaboration with Ontario Nature, is proud to announce the contribution of 1,956.59 hectares of SSMRCA’s Conservation and Management areas towards Canada’s target of protecting and conserving 30 per cent of our lands and waters by 2030, known commonly as the 30×30 target.
The partnership with Ontario Nature led to an extensive evaluation of these lands, which determined that SSMRCA properties are being conserved for biodiversity at national standards for Protected and Conserved Areas. SSMRCA’s involvement marks a significant step towards halting and reversing biodiversity loss within the Algoma region through SSMRCA’s dedication to nature stewardship and conservation.
