SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCSC) — Several law enforcement agencies responded to a mental health crisis on Interstate 95 early Tuesday morning.
Deputies responded to Interstate 96 southbound near the 77-mile marker around 2:30 a.m. to assist police with a person holding onto the edge of a bridge and threatening to end their life.
Deputies, police and troopers with the South Carolina Highway Patrol worked together to make sure the interstate was safe to travel, to ensure the public’s safety and to engage the person in crisis through communication and negotiation, Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Steven Wright said.
Law enforcement collaborated to develop and execute a plan that brought the crisis to a peaceful solution. No injuries were reported.
Dorchester County Sheriff Sam Richardson thanked his team and other law enforcement agencies for how they handled the situation.
“Today’s outcome is a testament to the power of collaboration. Every agency on scene worked together with one shared mission, to save a life,” Sheriff Richardson said. “I am incredibly proud of the patience, professionalism, and compassion displayed by our deputies, the St. George Police Department, and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.”
St. George Police Chief Adam Dunaway said the department’s work requires teamwork whenever lives are at risk.
“Moments like this remind us that no agency stands alone,” Chief Dunaway said. “When lives are at risk, badges and jurisdictional lines take a back seat to teamwork, compassion, and the duty we all share to protect those in need.”
