The PGA Tour announced that it has suspended one of its players for violating its anti-doping rules.
PGA Tour player Trey Mullinax has been handed a six-month suspension for breaching the circuit’s anti-doping policy.
Mullinax, a one-time tour winner, tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance that is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency. The 34-year-old said in a statement on Wednesday that he used medication to treat a condition he had been diagnosed with in college, but had not received approval under the tour’s policy to take it.
The PGA Tour said Mullinax co-operated fully with the investigation into his violation.
“I take full responsibility for what happened,” Mullinax wrote. “At the end of the day, it is my responsibility to understand and follow the PGA Tour’s Anti-Doping Policy and all of its rules and regulations. I failed to do that, and that is on me.
“I recently used a medication to treat a condition I was originally diagnosed with in college without seeking approval under the Tour’s Anti-Doping Policy.
“My lack of knowledge is not an excuse. It was my responsibility to know the rules before taking any medication and I failed to do so. I want to be absolutely clear – I have never taken any substance with the intention of gaining a competitive advantage. Anyone who knows me knows how much I respect this game and the values it represents.”
Mullinax, who won the Barbasol Championship in 2022, will be eligible to return in January 2027. He has conditional status this year after finishing 150th in last season’s FedEx Cup standings.
