Despite water levels returning to normal on the Red River following heavy rainfall in the Westman region, the Assiniboine River in Winnipeg remains fast-moving and unpredictable, and the Winnipeg Police Service is urging people to use caution around waterways.
Three paddlers swept downstream
Just over a week ago, three experienced paddlers overturned their craft on the Assiniboine River and were swept downstream, ending up in three different locations.
“We attended the call. It ended up good this time, but these people knew what they were doing, and even though the river was treacherous, those guys ended up overturning their canoe,” said Ray Duma, a river patrol officer with the WPS Marine Unit. “It can happen to anybody. We want everybody to use care and caution on our waterways.”

Duma is encouraging anyone near the water to take precautions, including wearing a properly fitted lifejacket or personal flotation device, staying well back from fast-moving water and never underestimating the strength of the current.
“Please don’t head down to the river to see the conditions for yourself,” said Duma. “The current remains extremely powerful, especially through The Forks, and conditions can change quickly.”
If you see someone in distress in the water, call 9-1-1 immediately.
“Stay safe,” said Duma. “Respect the water.”
