Mikaela Mayer vs. Chantelle Cameron: Beyond The Ropes
Not everything in life needs a little slice of clickbait to sell it. Some things just sell. The fight between Mikaela Mayer and Chantelle Cameron is one such thing. It sells itself.
There is no fake beef. They respect each other. They like each other. But that won’t stop Mayer and Cameron from repeatedly punching each other in the face on August 29th in Birmingham.
“I’m predicting female fight of the year 100%,” Mayer said at this week’s London press conference. Mayer is right. It will be. “We know how great of a fight this is because we made it,” Mayer added. That is also true. When the fight was somewhat in doubt, when there was a minor dispute over two-minute rounds or three-minute rounds, they found a way. Others would have found a way out.
“It’s going to be good,” Cameron says. Cameron is wrong. It’s likely to be very good.
That is what makes it an easy sell. Mayer has delivered an extensive resume of such fights. Mayer traded blows with Maïva Hamadouche, Natasha Jonas and Sandy Ryan. They were some of the greatest female fights of the modern era. Her fight with Chantelle Cameron will likely be another to add to that ever-increasing list.
Cameron is no stranger to delivering a masterclass of beautiful brutality. Those two fights with Katie Taylor were unforgettable. Forty relentless minutes in two truly magical fights. They shared the spoils. One win apiece. We should have been treated to a third fight. It never came. Cameron has had to wait nearly three years for a challenge to get excited about. She has found one.
“I know what I am capable of, but obviously, I need the dance partners to bring that out of me,” Cameron told me earlier this year. I’m not sure ‘dance’ is a suitable word for what they will undoubtedly serve up in Birmingham. But the former undisputed world super-lightweight champion finally has what she needs.
“Hopefully, for women’s boxing as well, more fights like this happen,” Cameron said in London. “The best fight the best, and just get the contract signed and get in the ring and fight each other. Stop talking and just get down to action.” Mayer and Cameron will do exactly that. They are setting the tone. Alycia Baumgardner and others should take note. Hall of Fame legacies are earned. Not given.
Three world super-welterweight titles will be on the line. They matter. Of course they do. But will that even cross their minds when that first bell rings? For them, winning is all that matters.
In simple terms, it’s just a very good fight between two genuine pound-for-pound fighters. And one that can’t fail to deliver. And the contracted rematch clause means we will get to see it again. What’s not to like?
