One Brampton location of a Mississauga-based shawarma restaurant chain has been closed due to owed rent payments, but could reopen when the debts are paid.

Landmarx Property Management Inc. has confirmed to INsauga.com that it has terminated the lease of the Lazeez Shawarma restaurant at 12 Kennedy Road South in Brampton.

A notice posted on the unit’s door says Lai Sing Company Limited owes “$6,545.58 plus all costs, including Bailiff Fess, locksmith, and any other fees associated with this termination.” The notice was issued on July 21.

A representative with Landmarx said the management company is working with the Lazeez head office to resolve the issue, and hopes that Lazeez will reopen.

Attempts to contact the restaurant and the Lazeez head office were unsuccessful.

Calling itself authentically Middle Eastern and proudly Canadian, Lazeez Shawarma has been growing steadily since its inception in 2013. Founded in Mississauga, the restaurant chain has since expanded to include 60 locations in the Greater Toronto Area and across Ontario.

Restaurants being shuttered due to owed rent isn’t entirely uncommon, but the debts of $6,545.58 are low compared to other Ontario closures.

In April, INsauga.com reported on a downtown Oshawa steakhouse shut down with a notice on the front door from the landlord saying the restaurant owners owe nearly $70,000 in back rent. And in 2022, www.insauga.com/27000-back-rent-owed-forces-mississauga-restaurant-to-close/.

The WORKS Craft Burger & Beer was open for over a decade in Brampton but quietly closed up shop in 2024 after the landlord didn’t renew the lease,  and the franchise was given very short notice about the change.

Lazeez has 10 locations in Brampton, including one that is “temporarily closed” at Queen Street and Steeles Avenue.
