Randhawa asks feds to stage Surrey town hall meeting on foreign election interference

Surrey mayoral candidate Honveer Randhawa is asking federal Minister of Public Safety Gary Anandasangaree to “travel to Surrey without delay” to participate in a public town hall meeting here on foreign election interference and transnational threats to Canadian democracy.
“Your presence on the ground is important to reassuring residents who are understandably concerned about the recent allegations involving Surrey’s municipal election,” Randhawa wrote the minister on July 30.
Randhawa is leading the Conservative Party of Surrey into the October 17 civic election.
He’s calling on Anandasangaree and Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand for “immediate” action from the federal government to investigate alleged foreign interference in this campaign after Safe Surrey Coalition mayoral candidate Doug McCallum broached the issue on July 28.
“Recent reporting has raised alarming claims that a coordinated network of at least six Facebook pages, presenting themselves to residents as local news sources, may be operated and funded from India while purchasing advertising directed at voters in Surrey, Delta and Vancouver,” Randhawa told the ministers.
“I do not present these allegations as established facts, nor do I ask Canadians to accept them without evidence. I do, however, believe that they must be investigated promptly, independently and thoroughly so that Surrey residents can know the truth.”
He also asked Anandasangaree to take “proactive action” to protect community leaders and all religious institutions.
“Please commit immediately to proactive measures protecting at-risk community leaders, candidates, activists and religious institutions,” he wrote.
