But hey, this is boxing, so Paul will fight Davis instead, despite the fact that he outweighs “Tank” by nearly 66 pounds. “El Gallo” tipped the scale at 199.4 ahead of his Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fight last June while Davis clocked in at 133.8 for his first Roach fight back in February.
Paul (12-1, 7 KOs) vs. Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) will be held under exhibition rules this November on Netflix.
“Talks for Paul to face Anthony Joshua collapsed over network issues,“ boxing reporter Mike Coppinger wrote on social media. ”Davis was slated for a title fight rematch with Roach in August while Paul was in talks for a major step-up against Joshua, the former heavyweight champion. Instead, they will meet each other in what amounts to a show that will no doubt do big business, but is less fighting than it is entertainment given the weight disparity and exhibition rules.“
“When Floyd Mayweather faced Jake’s brother Logan in an exhibition in 2021, Mayweather couldn’t weigh more than 160 while Logan was capped at 190,” Coppinger added. “Would expect some similar exhibition rules for weigh ins here. And obviously much larger gloves.”
Joshua has yet to comment on losing his Paul payday.
