Police seize firearm after driver arrested in Surrey

Surrey Police Service (SPS) shared in a release that one man has been arrested and a firearm and ammunition has been seized following an early morning incident on Sunday (Aug. 2).
SPS says that shortly before 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 2, frontline officers responded to a 9-1-1 call that a driver of a vehicle was slumped over in their car that was stopped in the middle of the road near the intersection of 18 Avenue and 138 Street, Surrey.
Officers were said to have arrived on scene and safely boxed the suspect vehicle in with police cars to prevent it from driving away. SPS says the driver was alone in the vehicle and was found slumped over the driver’s seat and unresponsive despite repeated commands.
SPS explained that officers were concerned the driver needed medical attention and as officers tried to take the man to custody, he regained consciousness and tried to start the vehicle and drive away. This was prevented by the police cars in place.
The driver was said to have been safely taken into custody and an unloaded firearm, along with ammunition and three knives, were all located inside the car and seized.
SPS says that the man, an adult male, remains in SPS custody and charges have not yet been sworn.
