Heat predicted to trade Nikola Jovic for $298M generational shooter, NBA champion in 3-team deal

The Miami Heat are continuing to explore ways to improve their roster this offseason after acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo in a blockbuster trade. One of Miami’s biggest remaining needs is adding more perimeter shooting to round out the roster.

As of now, the Heat have significant interest in adding four-time NBA champion Klay Thompson.

“Dallas Mavericks guard Klay Thompson, a five-time All Star and the fourth-most prolific three-point shooter in NBA history, has emerged as a player of strong interest to the Miami Heat, multiple sources said in recent days. The Heat has interest in adding Thompson whether LeBron James joins the Heat or not, a source said,” Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson wrote.

Not only are the Heat interested in Thompson, but he has also become their top priority this offseason.

“They hope not. The Miami Heat’s number one priority right now is to acquire shooting. And they found their No. 1 target for that…Klay Thompson. The problem is Klay Thompson has one year left on his Mavs contract so they’re exploring whether they can trade for him, whether this could end up in a buyout, we’ll see over the next several weeks,” ESPN’s Shams Charania said.

Miami will likely have to complete a trade to acquire Thompson. NBA writer Jake Weinbach believes the Heat could land him in a three-team deal.

“A trade idea between the Heat, Clippers, and Mavericks: • Heat Klay Thompson • Clippers Nikola Jovic (via TPE) 2032 first-round pick swap (via MIA) + cash (via DAL) • Mavericks $17.4M TPE,” Weinbach wrote.

In this proposed deal, the Los Angeles Clippers would receive a young player with plenty of potential in Nikola Jovic. Miami would address its biggest need by adding one of the league’s premier shooters, while the Mavericks would create valuable financial flexibility through a trade exception.

Thompson has earned $298 million throughout his NBA career. The Heat understand the importance of surrounding Antetokounmpo with floor spacing, and adding one of the greatest shooters in NBA history would accomplish exactly that.
