Edmonton has confirmed four new cases of Dutch elm disease (DED), upping the total case count in the city to 14 since its first discovery in 2024.
The trees, two being located in the Rossdale neighborhood and two in the Glengarry neighborhood, were identified via a visual inspection. The trees were removed as part of ongoing efforts to prevent the spread of the fungal disease.
All trees within one kilometre will be subject to heightened monitoring and assessments.
Elm trees make up roughly 22 per cent of the city’s open space and boulevard tree inventory, totaling approximately 90,000 city-owned elm trees across Edmonton.
