Red Deer hosts Alberta Open

Some of the best tennis players in the province were in Red Deer this past weekend for one of Canada’s longest-running tennis tournament.

The 113th Alberta Open was held in Red Deer from Thursday, July 30 to Monday, Aug. 3 at the Red Deer Tennis Club, located next to the Don Moore Recreation Centre.

“It’s been a great tournament all weekend long,” said Colin Latchford, Tennis Alberta executive director.

“We’ve got all levels competing, from open levels down to more recreational players. We have men, women, doubles and singles. We added a wheelchair division for the first time in many years.”

The Alberta Open has run since 1906, only interrupted during the First World War, the Second World War, the 2013 Alberta floods and the COVID-19 Pandemic.

— Men’s Singles Open: Andre Szilvassy (first) and Liam Spiers (second).

— Men’s Singles 5.0: Jonathan Pearson (first) and Fraser Hart (second).

— Men’s Singles 4.0: Bahman Sobbi (first) and Christopher James York (second).

— Men’s Singles 3.0: Clarke Jay (first) and Haopeng Jin (second)

— Women’s Singles Open: Jennifer Fang (first) and Mika Oguro (second).

— Women’s Singles 5.0: Mary Potter (first) and Liisa Wheadon (second).

— Women’s Singles 4.0: Karen Leah Mackay (first) and Katie Avram (second).

— Women’s Singles 3.0: Amber Qian (first) and Nadya Vandervelden (second).

— Men’s Doubles Open: Jeff David Spiers/Liam Spiers (first) and Harry Lin/Armaan Patel (second).

— Men’s Doubles 5.0: Henry Gardiner and Arthur Usevicius (first), and Drake Chao and Jack Snell (second).
