LETTER: Surrey needs to crack down on loud, obnoxious vehicles

Is it my imagination, or not, but are vehicles in Surrey getting louder and more obnoxious?
About four years ago, my wife and I moved to New Westminster. Before we left, we did notice a small number of noisy vehicles and moving to New West, there were a few as well.
We have now moved back to Surrey in the area around 64th Avenue and 144 Street. The number of vehicles with straight pipes seems to be getting out of hand. From cars to pickup trucks, a vast majority have them. My understanding is that these owners are removing catalytic converters, mufflers, and resonators, and installing straight pipes.
I believe that this practice is illegal, and if it is, then why are there so many people doing this and getting away with it? And how can these shops be allowed to perform this work?
If these individuals think these loud, backfiring vehicles sound cool, then ask the majority of people in Surrey, and I am sure they would strongly disagree with you.
I am sure the Surrey Police Service are doing the best they can and have more important things to do, but this is getting to the point that it is getting unbearable. When you can’t leave your windows open at night for fresh air, and have to turn the TV up to hear it, then there is a big problem.
Because of these vehicles, something has to change. Although we love Surrey, this is beginning to take its toll on us.
