Water utility customers in Louisbourg, N.S., are under a boil-water advisory after a major water main break at the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site.
Jenna MacQueen, a spokesperson for Cape Breton Regional Municipality, said officials learned of the break at 9 a.m. Wednesday and issued the advisory an hour later.
It applies only to Louisbourg water customers and not residents on private wells in the affected area, MacQueen said.
“So while the water is being restored, it’s very important, it’s required actually, that we do testing to make sure that there’s no bacteria in the drinking water,” she said. “There needs to be at least two negative samples that come back with no evidence of bacteria in that water.”
Customers should boil water for at least a minute before drinking it, preparing infant formula, making ice, washing fruits and vegetables, cooking, brushing teeth, or “any other activity that results in human consumption,” the municipality said in a news release.
The boil advisory will remain in effect until it’s confirmed there is no bacteria in the water, MacQueen said.
