A man is dead, and three people are under arrest after an officer‑involved shooting overnight that stemmed from a stolen vehicle investigation in Mississauga, the province’s police watchdog said.
Special Investigations Unit (SIU) spokesperson Monica Hudon said Toronto police officers were tracking a Mercedes that was reported stolen a day prior in the area of Council Ring Road and The Collegeway near Winston Churchill Boulevard around 12:22 a.m. on Thursday when the shooting occurred.
Hudon said there was an interaction, and three unmarked police vehicles became involved in a collision with the Mercedes, which was occupied by four suspects. One male, confirmed as the driver, was shot and critically injured. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His age was not provided.
“One officer discharged a firearm, and there is no evidence of other gunfire,” Hudon said, later noting that two firearms were discovered at the scene.
Three suspects who were in the stolen vehicle were taken into custody at the scene. A second male was transported to hospital with minor injuries. Investigators say no suspects are outstanding.
A Toronto police officer was taken to the hospital with minor injuries after a collision connected to the incident. It’s unclear if the injured officer was the one involved in the shooting.
The SIU has invoked its mandate, which is required whenever police are involved in an incident resulting in serious injury, death, or allegations of sexual assault.
