Surrey resident Mike Campbell becomes the British Columbia Hockey Conference’s new director of officiating ahead of the league’s inaugural Junior A season.
The new league landed “one of the most decorated officials in Canadian hockey,” trumpets a post on bchchockey.ca.
Campbell will oversee officiating operations, development programming, performance standards and department strategy, “shaping the league’s officiating identity from day one,” the BCHC announced.
“It’s a role that fits Campbell’s resume. An active Western Hockey League (WHL) official and the reigning WHL Official of the Year, he has worked some of the biggest games in the sport: the Olympic Games, IIHF Men’s World Championships, IIHF World Junior Championships, the CHL Memorial Cup, the Centennial Cup, and the American Hockey League (AHL) as a referee.”
Campbell’s first job will be recruiting and retaining officials for the new league, which launches in September as the Hockey Canada and BC Hockey-sanctioned Junior A league in the province with 22 teams in four divisions including Delta Ice Hawks, Langley Trappers and some other former PJHL clubs.
Close to 185 officials worked provincial junior hockey last year, according to BCHC brass.
“I’m looking forward to building a strong officiating program for junior hockey officials across the province of B.C.,” Campbell says in a news release.
Away from the ice, Campbell once worked at The Hockey Shop in Surrey (as website catalogue manager) and currently lives in the Fraser Heights area with his family. Campbell began officiating at age 12, playing rep hockey in Cloverdale at the time.
