Police say a Brampton boxer didn’t break the law but did make an “unusual” request when asking an officer if he wanted to go a few rounds in a video that went viral on social media.

“You can take the gloves out, I’ll take the Taser out – 50,000 volts of electricity,” a Peel Regional Police officer says in the video, filmed on July 29, that was shared across Facebook, TikTok and Reddit.

The comments were made to Brampton boxer Gregory “Killer” Miller and were caught on camera after the fighter asked an officer “can you box?,” according to posts on Miller’s social media pages.

“Why are you inviting me to fight you?” the officer asks, to which Miller replies, “it’s just sparring.”

A nearly eight-minute version of the video was posted on Reddit and YouTube, while shorter cuts have appeared on Facebook and TikTok.

Peel police say the incident happened when officers were called to a Brampton liquor store around 7 p.m. on July 29 for reports of people loitering and drinking in public. Two officers were on foot investigating when they were called over to a vehicle, and that’s when the odd interaction took place.

And while police say what Miller did wasn’t a crime, it was out of the ordinary.

“While it’s not illegal to ask an officer if he wants to box, it certainly is a bit unusual and not something offices encounter on a regular basis,” Peel police Const. Tyler Bell-Morena said in a statement on Friday.

A request for comment from Miller was not returned by publication.

Due to the nature of the report and the incident’s proximity to a liquor store, Peel police say they requested the driver provide a breath sample, and officers were satisfied he was not under the influence of alcohol.

Reaction to the video online has been split, with some saying the interaction amounts to police harassment. But most posters frowned on Miller’s request to spar with police, with one Reddit user calling it a “waste (of) time for people on duty.”

Some users also commented on how young the pair of officers in the video are, and Bell-Morena acknowledged the officers are fresh-faced but still have a few years before “the grey hair will catch up with them.”

Peel police have not identified either of the officers in the video.

Bell-Morena said police shared details of the viral encounter because “context matters,” adding that officers “are expected to assess situations based on the totality of circumstances, not just one moment captured on video.”
