The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is continuing to investigate a police officer-involved shooting on July 30 in the southwest Calgary community of Bridlewood.
The incident happened after police responded to reports of a man firing a bow and arrow in a backyard on the 1000 block of Bridlemeadows Manor S.W. just before 2 a.m.
According to ASIRT, the 36-year-old man was not allowed to be at that home — which police had also been called to earlier that night — or possess weapons, as conditions of his release.
Police say they repeatedly asked the man to come outside without any weapons. But about an hour later, he left through the front door and moved toward officers while carrying a bow and arrow.
In response, a police service dog was released and two weapons — a “40-mm less-lethal impact weapon” and a service pistol — were fired.
Police performed first aid on the man after the weapons were fired. He was taken to hospital in critical condition, which has since been upgraded to stable.
The Calgary Police Service is also pursuing criminal charges against the man.
ASIRT says no further information is available for release as the investigation continues.
The incident is being investigated as a “Level One” matter, which refers to incidents involving serious injury or death, or serious allegations involving an officer’s actions.
Part of the Police Review Commission, ASIRT is an independent civilian-led agency that investigates serious incidents involving police across Alberta, including potential criminal offences.
